Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about recording, producing, mixing, mastering, and booking at Animus. Still have a question? Get in touch.
The Studio
Where is Animus Studios located?+
Animus Studios is at 112 Petrie Terrace, Petrie Terrace QLD 4000, minutes from the Brisbane CBD, Milton, Paddington, and Fortitude Valley. There is easy access from across Brisbane and Southeast Queensland, and we also work remotely for artists anywhere in Australia and overseas.
What rooms does the studio have?+
We have three bookable spaces: Studio A (a treated live room with a calibrated control room for full-band tracking), Studio B (a production and mixing suite for writing, beatmaking, editing, and mixing), and an isolated voiceover booth for voice, narration, and podcast recording. There is also an artist lounge for downtime between takes.
Who runs the sessions?+
Sessions are led by Andrew Nolan, a producer and recording, mixing, and mastering engineer with over 14 years of experience and credits including Ian Gillan, Example, Disney, Amazon, and Audible. You work directly with an experienced engineer, not a junior.
Can I hire the studio without an engineer?+
Yes. We offer dry hire (self-operated studio time) for experienced producers and engineers who want the room and gear, as well as fully engineered sessions where Andrew records, produces, or mixes with you. Tell us which you need when you enquire and we will confirm availability and rates.
Recording
How do I prepare for a recording session?+
Come rehearsed and warmed up, with your songs arranged and any tempo or key decisions made in advance. Bring your own instruments if you can, plus spare strings, drum heads, and cables. For vocals, stay hydrated and rest your voice the day before. Our guide on preparing for a recording session covers everything in detail.
Can you record a full band live?+
Yes. Studio A is built for live tracking with players in the same room or with isolation, so a band can capture the energy of a live performance while keeping enough separation for a clean mix. We will plan the setup with you before the session to get the best result.
Do you offer music production and beatmaking?+
Yes. We produce across genres, from full productions built around a songwriter or artist to instrumentals and beats for hip hop, pop, and electronic music. Production can start from a topline, a demo, or a blank page in a writing session.
Mixing & Mastering
What is the difference between mixing and mastering?+
Mixing is where the individual recorded tracks (vocals, drums, guitars, synths) are balanced, treated, and combined into one cohesive stereo track. Mastering is the final polish on that stereo mix: level, tone, and loudness optimised so the track translates across every playback system and meets streaming and release standards. Our guide explains the difference in full.
Can you mix or master a project I recorded elsewhere?+
Yes. Remote mixing and mastering is a core service. Send us your session files or stems and we will mix or master to a professional, release-ready standard, with revisions, wherever you are in Australia or overseas.
Do you master for vinyl and streaming?+
Yes. We master for streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music), CD, and vinyl, and can provide stem masters and platform-specific versions. Each format has different technical requirements, and we deliver to the right specification for your release.
Voiceover, Audiobook & Podcast
Do you record voiceover and narration?+
Yes. Our isolated voiceover booth is built for clean, broadcast-grade voice recording, and Andrew directs sessions with voice-coaching experience from masterclasses and commercial work for clients including Disney and Amazon. We handle commercial reads, narration, e-learning, and character work.
Can you produce audiobooks to ACX standard?+
Yes. We record, edit, and master audiobooks to ACX and Audible technical requirements, including RMS level, noise floor, and formatting, so your title passes review and sounds professional. We have produced audiobook content for Audible.
Do you record and produce podcasts?+
Yes. We record podcasts in the booth or Studio B, with multi-guest setups available, and handle editing, mixing, and mastering so each episode sounds consistent and clear. We can deliver finished episodes ready to publish.
Booking & Pricing
How do I book a session?+
Use the Book a Session button to send us your session type, preferred room, hours, and dates, or contact us directly. We will confirm availability, recommend the right room and approach, and lock in your booking. Every enquiry goes straight to our team.
How much does a session cost?+
Rates depend on the room, the session type, and whether you need an engineer or dry hire. Recording, production, mixing, and mastering are all quoted to suit the project. Tell us what you are working on and we will give you a clear quote.
Do you work with artists outside Brisbane?+
Yes. Artists travel to the studio from across Southeast Queensland, and our mixing, mastering, and production services are available remotely to anyone in Australia or overseas. Distance is no barrier to working with us.
